Simple Ways to Leave Work at Work

You don’t need a perfect routine to leave work at work.

You need something smaller than that. A moment of noticing that you’re still carrying it… before it walks through the door with you and lands on the people you love.

Because that’s how it usually goes. You’re home on paper. The laptop’s shut. But your mind is still in the meeting, still half-drafting tomorrow’s reply. And then someone asks you something, and you’re sharper than you meant to be. Not because of them. Because you never actually arrived.

So this isn’t a checklist to get right. It’s a handful of moments to notice.

Notice the loop still running. The unfinished task, the thing you’ll come back to. You don’t have to keep holding it in your head. Just notice you’re holding it.

Notice the crossing. Shutting the laptop, changing clothes, the walk from the car, the kettle going on. Not because the activity fixes anything… but because it’s a moment you could catch yourself in. The boundary isn’t the action. It’s the noticing.

Notice the thought when it comes back. Work will pop up later. Instead of fighting it, just see it: “there it is again.” No judgement. Noticing it is enough.

Notice who you’re arriving to. Before you walk in… ask yourself, am I still at work in my mind? You don’t have to change the answer. Just see it honestly.

Notice what you’re arriving to. This is the one I keep coming back to. You’re not just switching work off. You’re arriving somewhere. Dinner. The kids. A partner. The dog. An evening on your own. Whatever home is that day.

You don’t need all of these. You don’t even need most of them.

Pick the one moment that keeps catching you out, and just start noticing it.

You won’t catch it every time. That’s not failing. Noticing it afterwards still counts. That’s the practice.

The aim was never to become perfect at leaving work behind.

It’s to catch the little windows where you get to choose who walks through the door.

More on this in Why your mind doesn’t arrive home when your body does.

I made something small for exactly this moment.

A Micro-Reset wallpaper for your phone. A prompt that gives you a pause between the trigger and the reaction, right in the middle of your real life. Not a course. Nothing to keep up with. No promise you’ll feel calm.

I’m giving one away free to real mothers right now.

The wallpaper doesn’t do the work. You do. But it’ll help you notice sooner.

Learn as you live.
